Peter A. Downard


Peter A. Downard is Senior Litigation Counsel and a Partner in the national law firm of Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP. He has acted as Defamation Counsel in litigation at trial, in the Court of Appeal for Ontario, and in the Supreme Court of Canada, as well as in numerous mediations and advisory matters. He is a Lexpert leading practitioner in defamation and the author of the legal text Libel, referred to as authority in numerous court decisions. He also has extensive experience in commercial and public interest litigation. He was Lead Counsel to former Ontario Premier Mike Harris in the Ipperwash Inquiry (2004-2007). In 2003 he was lead counsel in the lengthy trial of John Doe v. O’Dell, [2003] O.J. No. 3546, (2003), 230 D.L.R. (4th) 383 (Ont. S.C.J.), in which his client obtained the largest judgment on record against a Catholic Diocese for sexual abuse of a child. He has appeared as counsel in over 50 reported cases. He regularly speaks on legal matters and is often interviewed on legal topics by various media.
