      Tyler Botten, B.Sc., LL.B. / Valerie Steeves, BA., J.D., Ph.D.


      Tyler Botten, B.Sc., LL.B., is an Ottawa-based lawyer whose practice focuses on criminal and regulatory offences. He attended law school at the University of New Brunswick where he graduated with distinction and was awarded the Law Faculty Prize. He is the co-Founder of the University’s Criminal Law Society and completed his articles at Gowling, Lafleur Henderson.

      Valerie Steeves, BA., J.D., Ph.D., formerly practiced corporate commercial law in Toronto and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology with a cross-appointment in the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. Her main area of research is law and technology issues. Professor Steeves has written and spoken extensively on privacy, and is currently a researcher with the New Transparency project at Queen’s University. The project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and examines surveillance as a technology of governance in late modern societies. Professor Steeves is also an active participant in the privacy policy making process and a frequent intervenor before parliamentary committees. She is a member of the Technical Committee on Privacy of the Canadian Standards Association and the Committee on Scientific Freedom and Responsibility of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Chair of the National Privacy Coalition. In 2004, Professor Steeves she was awarded the Labelle Lectureship at McMaster University, a juried prize that recognizes scholars engaged in cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research that challenges existing methods or accepted ideas.
