Apart from sole proprietorship, partnership is likely the oldest form of business organization known to the common law, and one of the most pervasive. Originally developing out of the law of contracts it is an independent body of law that has a life and development of its own. The law of partnerships in Canada represents a classic example of judge-made law, for the most part distilled and illuminated but not codified by statute. Oil and Gas

Michael A. Thackray, Q.C. is a Partner with McMillan. He has extensive experience in all aspects of oil and gas law both in Canada and internationally and has been recognized for several years as a Leading Practitioner in Energy – Oil & Gas by Lexpert and as a Leading Individual by Chambers Global - The World’s Leading Lawyers. With extensive cross-border experience, he has been retained by other Canadian law firms as an expert on oil and gas litigation matters and has been qualified as an expert in the United States and before the Alberta courts. He has provided expert opinion reports and evidence at trial. Mr. Thackray’s clients include private and public companies (junior, intermediate and senior) in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of both public and private oil and gas companies in Canada and internationally as Chairman of the Board for CentrePoint Non-Profit Management. He is also a member of McMillan’s Board of Partners.

Partnerships

Maurice Coombs is a former partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP and a senior member of the firm’s Research Group. For more than 15 years, he was Chair of Osler’s Research Group, and was also a member of the firm’s pension and benefits department and a member of the Opinions Committee. His research practice at Osler was concentrated in corporate and commercial law, trust law, partnerships, conflicts of laws and similar matters although, like the Osler, Hoskin Research Group as a whole, he was engaged from time to time in all areas of the firm’s wide practice. At various times he undertook work for the Canadian and Ontario governments involving statutes and proposed statutes relating to corporations law, trust law, pension investment law and the regulatory regimes relating to specific government or government sponsored pension plans. Mr. Coombs has lectured at and written papers for legal and professional programmes held by a variety of organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association, the Association of Canadian Pension Management, the Canadian Pension & Benefits Institute, the Toronto Stock Exchange, the Montreal Exchange, the Canadian Institute, The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and The Law Society of Upper Canada.
