Rui M. Fernandes, B.Sc., J.D., LL.M. / John Mascarin, M.A., LL.B.

John Mascarin, M.A., LL.B., is a Partner with Aird & Berlis LLP in Toronto and is a member of the firm’s Municipal and Land Use Planning Group. Mr. Mascarin is a Certified Specialist (Municipal law: Local Government/Land Use Planning and Development). He received his LL.B. from Osgoode Hall Law School and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1989. He is the longstanding Editor-in-Chief of the Municipal and Planning Law Reports (Carswell) and the Digest of Municipal and Planning Law (Carswell). He is also the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Real Property Reports (Carswell). Mr. Mascarin is the co-author of the Annotated Ontario Building Code Act (LexisNexis), Ontario Municipal Act & Commentary (LexisNexis), Annotated Land Development Agreements (Carswell), The Annotated Municipal Act, 2nd Edition (Carswell) and A Comprehensive Guide to the City of Toronto Act, 2006 (LexisNexis). He is on the faculty at both Osgoode Hall Law School and York University where he teaches both municipal law and planning law for the LL.M., J.D. and M.E.S. programs. He has written and spoken extensively on topics in the municipal, planning, development and real estate law areas. He is a Past Chair of the Municipal Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association.

Rui M. Fernandes, B.Sc., J.D., LL.M., is a partner with Fernandes Hearn LLP, a Toronto-based litigation law firm, who specializes in maritime and transportation law. Mr. Fernandes received his B.Sc. from the University of Toronto in 1976, his J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1979, and his LL.M. from the University of London (London School of Economics and Political Science) in 1981. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1982 and has appeared in all levels of court in Canada including the Supreme Court of Canada. He is also the author of the Transportation – Carriage of Goods and Railway titles for Halsbury’s Laws of Canada. His other publications include Transportation Law (Looseleaf Service) and Boating Law of Canada, 2004.
